About Kurara FM

Kurara FM is a community radio station in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. The station started its first day of broadcast on 01 January 2012 and has been going strong ever since. The RAMS (Radio Audience Measurement Survey) currently stands at 73 000 listeners (SAARF; January 2019 To December 2019). A point worth noting is that Kurara FM broadcasts in three languages, namely: Setswana, English and Afrikaans. It can be reached daily on 98.9 MHz. On the 6th May 2014, Kurara FM succeeded in having their transmitter extended in order for the radio station to cover the entire district of John Taolo Gaetsewe and currently as it stands the radio station reaches also the Siyanda District and Frances Baard district, being towns such as Kathu, Danielskuil, Posmansburg, Olifantshoek, Vryburg, Taung, Kimberly, and more than 204 villages.

Vision

To be a sustainable community radio station that fulfills its mission and implements its social mandate. To fulfill its mandate, Kurara FM has the following general objectives:

  • To endeavour to educate the marginalised community about the culture of broadcasting
  • To improve the welfare of the rural community through exposure to local and national events etc.

Mission

To establish a community radio station, which will bridge the gap in the district with programmes to empower, inform and educate through training and celebrating diversity, which serves to enhance the quality of life by reconciling people with the focus to integrate our society.
